James DeFiglia Orchestral Strings
Mr. DeFiglia holds a B.M. degree in Double Bass Performance and an M.M. degree in Music Theory from the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He is currently ABD status for the Ph.D. in Music Theory from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has performed in numerous professional organizations as a double bass and electric bass player including the North Carolina, Greensboro, and Charleston Symphony Orchestras. Mr. DeFiglia has been an adjunct lecturer in Music Theory at UNCG and taught music fundamentals, ear-training, sight-singing, tonal harmony, musical form analysis, as well as 20th century analysis at UNCG and CCM. He has composed and arranged for a diverse variety of ensembles and recently received performances as part of the CCM “Sonic Explorations” concert series. He is in his 5th year at Weaver where he has directed the orchestral strings program and taught Music History, Music Theory, and Jazz Ensemble. |

| Course Descriptions
Studio Strings • The focus of this course will be the preparation of instrumental string music emphasizing the Baroque era. Performance practices of this era will be examined by playing multiple solo and ensemble works. Major and minor scales up to and including 2 sharps and 2 flats will be drilled (including their respective arpeggios). Solo string repertory for 9th grade students will be primarily drawn from musical works of the Baroque era. This course will also include sight reading and a solo playing assessment at the end of each semester. Sophomore year -- Advanced Strings • The focus of this course will be the preparation of instrumental string music emphasizing the Classical era. Performance practices of this era will be examined by playing multiple solo and ensemble works. Major and minor scales up to and including 4 sharps and 4 flats will be drilled (including their respective arpeggios). Solo string repertory for 10th grade students will be primarily drawn from musical works of the Classical era. This course will also include sight reading and a solo playing assessment at the end of each semester. Junior year -- String Ensemble and Honors String Ensemble • The focus of this course will be the preparation of instrumental string music emphasizing the Romantic era. Performance practices of this era will be examined by playing multiple solo and ensemble works. Major and minor scales up to and including 5 sharps and 5 flats will be drilled (including their respective arpeggios). Solo repertory for 11th graders will survey musical pieces from the Romantic era and the 20th century. This course will also include sight reading and a solo playing assessment at the end of each semester. Senior year -- Strings IV and Honors Strings IV • The focus of this course will be the preparation of instrumental string music emphasizing the Romantic era and the 20th century. Performance practices of these eras will be examined by playing multiple solo and ensemble works. Major and minor scales up to and including 7 sharps and 7 flats will be drilled (including their respective arpeggios). Solo repertory for 12th graders will survey musical pieces from the Romantic era and the 20th century. This course will also include sight reading and a solo playing assessment at the end of each semester. |
