Mark Freundt Piano
Mark Freundt graduated from UNCG in 1989 with a BM in Piano Performance (classical and jazz studies) having studied with Dr. Barbara F. Hill. He taught classical and jazz piano at the Music Academy of North Carolina (formerly Greensboro Music Academy) for 12 years in both private and group settings. He has also been on the music faculty of Guilford College for 12 years where he again taught private classical and jazz piano as well as Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Appreciation for college age and adult students. Mr. Freundt has been a charter faculty member at Weaver Academy beginning Fall 2003. Currently, he is the Director of Music Ministry at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro; a position he has held since 2001. He maintains an active performance calendar as a freelance jazz pianistoften performing with singer, Cle Thompson. He has two jazz recordings, “Dance for the Moon” and “Chelsea Bridge,” along with various recordings for Kindermusik International and Latham Music. He also has two hymn arrangements published in “Singing The Journey.” Mr. Freundt is also the winner of the 1992 NC Jazz Composers Fellowship. |

| Course Descriptions
Piano I • A comprehensive skill and artistic development course that strives to reach beyond Early Intermediate level through individual repertoire development, study of major and natural minor scales and related arpeggios, level appropriate collaborative ensemble work and introduction of a multitude of performance skills. Lessons will be centered on themes derived from Dr. Stewart Gordon’s work Memorization in Piano Performance. Piano II • Building from foundations in Piano I, this course strives to reach beyond Intermediate level through individual repertoire development, study of major contrary and harmonic minor scales and related arpeggios, level appropriate collaborative ensemble work and refinement of a multitude of performance skills. Lessons will be centered on themes derived from Madeline Bruser’s The Art of Practicing. Piano III • Building on skills and concepts in Piano II, this course strives to reach beyond Late Intermediate level through individual repertoire development, study of harmonic contrary and melodic minor scales and related arpeggios, level appropriate collaborative ensemble work and refinement of a multitude of performance skills. Lessons will be centered on themes derived from Alfred Publishing’s Performance Practice series. Class Piano • This course will provide basic music reading skills at the keyboard through the development of successful problem-solving and practice habits. Regular playing skills tests featuring rudimentary solo and ensemble pieces will be given to assess each student’s progress. |
