John Cirt Gill – Music Production

Cirt Gill is a graduate of the School of Music at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1973 with a degree in Music Education. He worked as a Band Director in the Greensboro City Schools and the Guilford County School system since 1984, working with band students from the 4th grade to the 12th grade. Cirt Gill has directed Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band, and a Steel Drum Band at different schools, in numerous concerts and performances. He has been teaching Music Production at the Weaver Academy for the Performing & Visual Arts since 2003. He is a member of MENC, The Central District Band Masters Assoc., Local 342 of the American Federation of Musicians. Gill was a professional musician before teaching and has toured with bands in 7 countries outside the United States, along with performances in a five state circuit in the Southeast U.S.  In 1985 Cirt Gill was cast as a “Juke Joint Musician” in the movie, The Color Purple. He auditioned as a trumpet player and was selected by Quincy Jones for the part. Gill had the opportunity to be directed by Steven Spielberg and worked with Whoppi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, Laurence Fishburne, Margaret Freeman, and Margaret Avery.

Course Descriptions

Academy Introduction to RecordingThis course serves as an introduction to the basics of sound and recording systems. Students will learn beginning terminology, study design and application, and become familiar with the fundamental operations of a studio set up.

Academy Recording Engineering IIThis course is a continuation of Recording Engineering I, and delves deeper into studio recording techniques, expanding into live sound situations and the mix down process

Academy Recording Engineering III • A continuation of Recording Engineering II, students will demonstrate knowledge of previously learned information through application. This course consists of assisting in all aspects of pre-production, recording sessions and post-production. Students in this class are expected to interact with other Weaver Academy groups for live recording and studio sessions.

Academy Recording Engineering IV • This course offers the student hands-on experience in the studio, assisting with recordings and the post-production process. Students actively participate in the production of a bi-weekly Podcast entitled, Weaver Action News. Each student gets the opportunity to experience an on-going commercial production schedule, to produce and edit defined projects in preparation for broadcast on the Internet.
