Course Descriptions

AP English 11 • Advanced Placement English 11 provides instruction that complies with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for English Language Arts/Grade 11 and the College Board Advanced Placement program for English Language and Composition. The course emphasizes and develops writing skills in response to non-fiction and literary works, including essays, journalism, political writing, scientific writing, letters, diaries, biographies, drama, novels, and poetry.  In addition to reading and responding to the writing and rhetorical strategies of a variety of authors, students will interpret, analyze, and write about the study models, developing their personal writing skills.  This course will involve students in different communication environments based on purpose, audience, and context, and will promote an integrated approach to the strands of oral language, written language, and other media/technology.

Honors English 12 • In preparation for college, this course requires the rigorous study of selected works of British literature, stressing extension and refinement of analytical reading, writing, thinking, and speaking skills. Grammar and punctuation will be refined and reinforced through extensive composition, while vocabulary will be expanded through the study of words in context.  
 
Each student will be required to complete an independent Graduation Project which consists of four components:  a research paper, product, portfolio, and an oral presentation.  The unique challenges presented by the Graduation Project will provide students with the opportunity to connect content knowledge, acquired skills, and work habits to real world       situations and issues.  For further information on the Graduation Product, please click here.

Creative Writing • The Creative Writing course focuses on a study of various forms and genres of prose and poetry which will serve as models through analysis, application, and imitation. Composition exercises will reflect an understanding of studied forms and an application of creative techniques.  Each student will complete an Independent Creative Writing Project of his/her choice during each nine-week grading period.
