Ryan Knudsen – Electronics

My name is Mr. Knudsen or Mr. K for short. I have been working in the Guilford County School system for five years, teaching classes such as Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Networking, and Home Technology Integration. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked in the Electronics Manufacturing industry, filling many roles; such as Network Administrator, Production Activity Controller, Production Manager, Project Manager, and many other technology related positions. I hold college degrees in Electronics, Information Technology, and Business Administration. This year I will be offering additional tutoring before school hours from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and after school as needed until 5:00 PM. If these hours do not fit with your needs, please schedule another time with me.

Course Descriptions

Computer Engineering Technology I • This semester we will be preparing for the first of two certification tests toward the CompTIA A+ certification. This certification will test you on your knowledge of computer hardware and operating systems, troubleshooting principles, and professional etiquette and protocols. We will be studying the following concepts to prepare for this exam:
• Introduction to the Personal Computer
• Safe Lab Procedures and Tool Use
• Computer Assembly
• Basics of Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting
• Fundamental Operating Systems
• Fundamental Laptops and Portable Devices
• Fundamental Printers and Scanners
• Fundamental Networks
• Fundamental Security
• Communication Skills

Honors Computer Engineering Tech II • This semester we will be preparing for the CompTIA A+ certification. This certification will test you on your knowledge of computer hardware and operating systems, troubleshooting principles, and professional etiquette and protocols. We will be studying the following concepts to prepare for this exam:
• Advanced Personal Computers
• Advanced Operating Systems
• Advanced Laptops and Portable Devices
• Advanced Printers and Scanners
• Advanced Networks
• Advanced Security
• Professional Etiquette and Communication Skills

This class will also involve a class project where students will interact with community representatives in a volunteer environment.

General information for both courses:
We will be using the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum available at http://cisco.netacad.net. You will be issued a username and password to access the online curriculum. The curriculum will be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week from any computer with internet access. If you do not have internet access, but have a computer at home, please see me for a copy of the curriculum. If you do not have a computer available at home, please schedule time in the library or my room to complete any homework assignments I may give. We will also be investigating apprenticeship programs for students who are interested.
