Meredith Newlin – English

I am entering my fifth year teaching at Weaver Academy and love teaching Honors English 9 and AP English 12. I earned a B.A. from UNC-Asheville in 2000 and before coming to Weaver in 2005 I worked as a contributing editor and writer for the magazines of United Airlines and the American Cancer Society.

Course Descriptions

Honors English 9 • In this course, students study a variety of works, including poetry, short stories, plays, novels and nonfiction. Students encounter authors ranging from Shakespeare to Robert Frost to George Orwell to Harper Lee. Through regular journaling, creative projects, presentations and a range of frequent writing assignments, students practice close reading and meaningful engagement with literature. Students also complete research, critique texts, actively participate in literary discussion, and sharpen skills with language and grammatical conventions.

AP English 12 • In this writing-intensive course, students engage in a broad and deep analysis of poetry, prose, drama and novels from a variety of genres, time periods, and contexts. Students become more aware of rhetorical purpose and the power of language, both in the study of masterful writers and in the crafting of their own literary responses.
The curriculum of this course follows a College Board-approved syllabus, reflecting the expectation that the content and rigor of this course will be equivalent to a college-level English composition course. Students take the AP Literature exam in May for an opportunity to earn college credit.
